American White Pelican Taking Off
Majestic Migrant: American White Pelican
The American White Pelican is an impressive bird in more ways than one. Its nine-foot wingspan is one of the largest of any North American bird, second only to the mighty California Condor. It’s also one of the heaviest flying birds in the world, weighing up to 30 pounds. A flock of these pelicans on the water or soaring high against a blue sky is an impressive sight.
Both sexes of American White Pelicans look alike, with snow-white plumage set off by black wing feathers that are most noticeable in flight. Bill, legs and feet are pale orange. Juveniles are dusky white with pale yellow bills and feet.

Lazuli Bunting Songs
Просмотров 578День назад
Named after a blue gemstone, lapis lazuli, the male Lazuli Bunting glows as brightly as its eponymous jewel. Its species name, amoena, which means “lovely” in Latin, is another nod to this bright little bird’s appearance. It’s a close relative to the equally eye-catching Painted Bunting, Varied Bunting, and Blue Grosbeak. During its breeding season, a male Lazuli Bunting has bright cerulean-blu...

Yellow-throated Vireo Song
Просмотров 49821 день назад
The chunky, colorful Yellow-throated Vireo is one of the most eye-catching of North America’s breeding vireos (the Blue-headed Vireo is also a contender.). It’s most notable for its bright yellow throat and breast, set off by broad yellow “spectacles” around the eyes. Other key ID features are greenish upperparts and gray wings with two bold white wingbars, and a white belly and undertail. Like...

Black-throated Gray Warbler eating and building nest
Просмотров 37228 дней назад
The Black-throated Gray Warbler is a distinctive songbird of dry, forested and brushy habitats in the western United States. Its bold black and white head stripes and gray back, streaked with black in adult males, are handy clues to its identification. The adult male also sports a black bib, which at first glance may give this bird the look of a chickadee or a Black-and-white Warbler, an easter...
Northern Waterthrush Singing and Foraging
Просмотров 52328 дней назад
Along with its cousin the Louisiana Waterthrush and the forest-living Ovenbird, the Northern Waterthrush is one of the only warblers colored like a sparrow or thrush, with a plain brown back and dark-streaked white underparts. It is also one of the few warblers to forage on the ground, patrolling the water's edge. As it strolls the mud, its backside constantly pumping up and down, it's easy to ...

Robins - and any of the Thrush, are one of my favorites to watch hunting. Listening this morning, before the crack of dawn, just a hint of light in the sky @ 4:15 am. I played this recording using a Bluetooth speaker, out the window to see if there would be a response I don't know if there was a response but I feel like I was in a conversation with the early bird

I live in east central GA. One spring I noticed out of my window a new bird on my shed roof/bird feeder. At first I thought someone's bird had escaped. It was eating millet I use for buntings. I searched my bird books, nothing in Eastern songbirds. I finally found it ..an immature Lazuli Bunting! We'd just had a strong storm blow up from southwest . I figured it must have blown him into our area. He stayed about a week, feeding daily, then he was gone. I figured he flew westward where he belonged. That was an exciting one time experience.

Two parents decided to make a nest in my atrium. Today the 3 babies jumped out of the nest and are using the atrium as this perfect little training grounds for them to hop around safely and gain their bearings. All the chairs and plants to hop onto. They even used this black pot to train them how to eat, by dropping worms into the pot and letting the babies root around for them. So cool. What a beautiful thing to be a part of!
